Facebook and many social media sites create a circle of jealousy that resonates in the minds of a spouse. The more time a person spends online and on social media the more opportunity there is for jealousy to spark. A lot of jealousy especially on Facebook sparks when the partner become friends or has messages with an ex partner or someone that is new. In this research it even states that jealousy is sparked on Facebook and other social media sites is the fear that their spouse or romantic partner is actually finding some new type of love interest and developing a new type of relationships (Marshall et al. 2012 ). All of these feelings lead into a person’s potential spiral of jealousy that can really dig a wedge into a new or long lasting relationship. The Takeaway
This research states that since the internet and online dating provides a very unique way of combining privacy, relative anonymity, and convenience that couple in monogamous relationships start to get a feeling of being dissatisfied and have the possibility of wanting new connections that can be formed online. This research talks about a specific gender difference when it comes to online jealousy (Guadagno et al. 2010). With women this study has shown that when it comes to online jealousy women are more worried about the possible emotional connection and men are more worried about the actual acts of passionate sex. Online jealousy relates and can feed into the personality types and already existing insecurities that couples have. Women are generally more emotional beings and social networking websites enable people to establish strong emotional attachments due to the fact that whether you meet the person in real life is all up to the two people involved in the interaction. Men are typically perceived as being more physically possessive and the fact that their is a possibility of their partner meeting up and doing explicit acts sparks jealousy. Overall, whether or not you you are male or female social networking sites spark up jealousy in are inherent personality traits.
